I have had the same problem this winter. I think it is the minus 20 cold. This winter I have had to use my 48 PW on a daily basis helping out my neighbors that have been snow bound in the foothills around me. Same thing minus 20 at night and 0-5 in the day time. After about 2hrs of running in 4 wheel the old gal starts to warm up her boxes and differentials. Mine will start up just fine in the 20 minus range 6 volts and all, this tells me that the engine is in a good tuned condition. Remember these trucks were built to work and work they do. I am sure the old boys had the same issues in extreme conditions. Your Dad probably had it down Pat and he knew that is was all part of the total wonderful experience of a Power Wagon
