I like the three-wire system because it reads the voltage at the battery. It's that medium sized red wire, it goes as close as possible to the battery + terminal.(Delco alternator)
A one wire system makes the 13.8-14.2 at the alternator, so some old wires, crusty connections, etc, will cut down the voltage that actually gets to the battery.
