Zinc is not exactly plutonium.

And zinc usually boils off at fairly low temps. That is why brazing turns redder if it gets too hot.

And the zinc oxide fumes are usually visible.

What was the other 36% ? Something that boiled off faster than the zinc?

Pure zinc is not used often, except as ingots for galvanizing. But it is used in alloys, with aluminum, added to copper to make brass or bronze, with tin for pewter, etc. So maybe your prob is not the zinc, but whatever else it was alloyed with?
