Tom is absolutely correct. The thermostatic blades are heated by electrical resistance. That is why there are two wires connecting to the tank unit. One wire for each thermostatic blade. Which ever side has the most resistance, heats up that blade the most, and pushes the needle in the appropriate direction.

In short, both wires conduct electricity. Neither wire acts as the ground. The tank unit is grounded through its housing to the gas tank. This is the usual place I find at fault. The tank, or the tank unit, has lost its ground. The effect - no current flow through the tank and gauges - no resistance created - no heating of the thermostatic blades - no reading on the dash gauge.

I would not go hooking up ANY power to ANY posts on either the dash unit or the tank unit until I had read and understood the WDX shop manual. You can burn out either the dash unit or the tank unit (or both) real fast by doing so. The instructions and explanations in the WDX shop manual are very good. It also tells you how to calibrate the gauges to one another, which HAS to be done to get a correct reading.
