This trend of not having a dipstick is really prevalent now, and seems to be designed to make it so you have to go to the dealer to even check the fluid level.
My Chrysler 300 developed a leak of the tranny fluid. I was concerened that the level might be low...but no dipstick. Luckily for me, my mechanic friend and neighbor had a friend who was a tranny man. He explained that you can buy a diptstick for service purposes from Chrysler for $70! or, fashion one out of a piece of coat hanger wire. He also told him how to mark the level on the wire and my friend was able to fix the situation without so much expense.
Now, the tranny on the 300 was made by Mercedes, who supposedly is not into stupid engineering, but this is dumb!!!
