I've had several treadmill work ups, EKG's and a heart scans. The goal of the treadmill is to apply sufficient stress to your cardiovascular system and then measure your recovery rate - when your beat normalizes. During that the time on the treadmill you'll feel like the bionic man from the attachment of electrodes.
A better measure of the health of your cardiovascular system is they inject a dye through your hand and then perform a scan which can determine the amount of arterial plaque
