Rick: here's what I do... mount the carrier in my big vise using the adaptor I made up to hold the case vertically. Scribe a line on the side of the housing up and onto the cap so that when it goes back together you can use this for checking tightness. Heat the case ( I only use a mapp gas spitfire torch) about 1/2" below the cap join line. Keep heating until the it smokes but the metal does not change colour. A straw colour is around 500 deg F. Install the top adaptor ( homemade as well ) to unscrew the cap using a 3/4" power bar and 6 foot extension pipe. It does take all the torque I can put into it. Slowly cycle the cap with tugs on the pipe until it comes unscrewed. Once the cap moves get it unscrewed quick most of the way out until the spigot portion is clear of the case. With any luck it will come undone and not pickup where the spigots enters the case bore. You'll see what I mean when you get it apart. It does take quite a while to heat though. When the case is hot all around I usually leave the torch on in one spot to get the extra expansion possible. I have never tried to melt the solder to test for heat as I believe I don't get mine that hot. The homemade adaptors really help out to hold it and unscrew the case / cap assembly.
