If you are using all new components you should check them before you install the bearing assembly. What I do is take a 3\4" bolt with washers and squeeze the two bearing cones in the double race. Place the head of the bolt in a vise and check for endplay with a dial indicator. Unless you have purchased an NOS bearing assembly that has been properly fitted there will most likely be clearance. I have access to a surface grinder and adjust as needed. However, I have made adjustments by clamping a piece of 80 grit emery cloth to my work bench and running the narrow end of the bearing cone back and forth and testing with the bolt until the clearance is just eliminated. If you try this method make sure the emery is on a flat surface. You would be surprised at how accurately you can fit the bearing assembly.
