It's true they have changed the "Chem-dip" formulation. I have two cans of the old stuff and will try to keep using them as long as possible. The good stuff contains methylene chloride, phenol, and some sort of chromate, among other things. The chromate is what gives the castings that nice corrosion-resistant yellowish finish. All of those chemicals are rated as nasty these days, but I think it's the hexavalent chrome that was actually banned. If you're lucky enough to still have some of the good kind, one way to make it last longer is to clean all the grease and loose dirt off the parts first with your favorite method before putting them in the chem-dip.
