Steering gear not designed to be serviced

Dodge designed these trucks with much attention to making them serviceable. Why do you think the steering gear doesn't have a drain plug? a simple 1/4" pipe plug at the bottom would allow you to drain the old or perhaps water contaminated oil. Once drained, the steering gear could be refilled with proper lubricant.

It would appear that the gear got filled at the manufacturer and you only added to it if it leaked. All the while allowing decades of crud and water to accumulate. Doesn't make sense that the engineers omited this little detail.
