The preload on the bearing on the worm shaft is set by the gaskets on the two end pieces (seal/bearing retainers). Stock gaskets come in two thicknesses and you stack up some combination of them such that the shaft turns freely without much noticeable end play. I found it easiest to do this with the worm shaft in the housing by itself so I could turn it without it trying to turn the big gear. You might get lucky and the first two gasket you cut out of whatever gasket material you have on hand might be just the ticket, but odds are they won't be. There's no reason you couldn't also use shims, including the ever-popular beer can shim stock, to add a little thickness. Make sure you put some gasket dope on any shims so the oil stays in and the water stays out. I have never seen an actual pre-load spec on these. I think "just barely turns easily" is about right. Unlike shims, you can compress gaskets slightly if you need to tighten it up just a hair. One surprising thing about that winch is there's no seal on the drum shaft. It's a plain bronze bushing and it's expected to leak some oil during use.
