Loosen the nut and whack the end of the shaft.

But leave the nut on, and don't whack so much that the shaft end gets beat to death. Give up while you can still get the nut off.
Pulling up on the wheel with your free hand helps. Use a 1-2 pound hammer, you want some speed.

Hey, if the only tool you've got is a hammer, all of your problems look like nails. ;)

That is my 10% effort method that works 90% of the time. Then I go dig out my pullers, even fire up the lathe to made something. Hmmm. Did I find a piece of pipe the right size to fit over the column, yet small enough to fit inside the recess under the wheel, cut to 2-3", saw it lengthwise, use some chain type vice grips around it, or a muffler u-clamp, and hook a long gear puller on shaft and pipe?

I like to snug up the puller and whack the end to pop it all loose. Back to favorite tools, nails, etc. ;) But is easier on the puller than cranking on it until something busts. Snap-On man don't stop by my house.
