Fuel tanks are not galvanized, they are 'tinned' with solder.

Maybe old tanks rust our because the tin and lead in the solder have all been absorbed and burned in the engines?

Oh well, now I have to go google "tin amalgam octane". Bit even if it does boost octane, that does not mean it acts as a lube to the seats.
