As Paul says, you will almost always be money (and time) ahead if you pay more for the truck initially.

A truck that is currently licensed and registered (preferably in your home state) is worth a more to you. Be careful of missing identification plates or unreadable serial numbers. Either can cause a hassle during registration. Know where the ID plates and numbers should be located on the truck you are buying.

Any PW that has been sitting a long time will probably need brake work. If the brakes are not working, plan on spending significant time and money, even if the owner says the brakes just need bleeding.

In doing a brake job, you may find that the front end also needs rebuilding. One thing often leads to another.

Take someone with you who has owned and worked on these trucks. Even if you have to pay expenses, or a little bit more, their advice will be invaluable.
