I think the December 25th date aligns better with the date of conception, putting the birth (of Jesus) late September. John the Baptist's conception can be documented to occuring in late June, as that's when his father's priestly duties would have ended. According to Jewish history the course of Abijah, of which Zacharias (John the Baptist's dad)was a part of,served that time of year. It was the 8th group of priests out of 24 listed in the old Testament.Mary & Elizabeth (John's the Baptist's mother) were related, therefore so were Jesus & John. Their mom's pregnancies were 6 months apart, Jesus being the latter of the two. And yes "church" has adjusted things around to incorporate pagan winter festivities into the mix probably.
