I seen lot of this when rebuild transfer cases what you're looking at inside the gear are bearing imprints that is call brinelling and is moistly do to the transfer case not being put in to low range time to time and run in high range most of it life , only time the bearings would turn is in low range in high range it doesn't spine and would bounces and will brinell . you will see this in u-joint and truck wheel bearing that are ship by trains a long distance
