in the marine world, we use a product called smith's or cpes - clear penetrating epoxy sealant. it flows like diesel fuel. you paint it on any wood you want to protect or repair. it penetrates deeply and then hardens. it is wood ester based so it is able to more deeply get into the wood. you top coat it with whatever you like, varnish, poly, epoxy - your choice. i would use it without reservation on a working power wagon bed. for a show truck, varnish, poly although available in more modern formulas are still the way to get that mile deep shine.
