broken axle

Tore down the front axle of my B1 PW last night expecting to find a bombed ring and pinion. Instead I found a shattered right front axle shaft. I have several questions, I think some of them have been covered before, so please humor me.

1. Will the addition of a front locker make it more or less likely that I will break more shafts?

2. Are there any aftermarket high strength front axle shafts available?

3. I noticed my good parts axle shaft has a line on the bottom, like casting flash, but not, since these are forged. Would polishing the axle shaft help eliminate stress risers and other weaknesses?

4. Axle shaft from the parts truck is rusty, is there any reason not to bead blast it to clean it up?

5. Does anyone know for sure why Dodge used a brake design on these trucks that was obsolete in 1940? (This is the least important of these questions.)

This truck has been repowered with a V-8 and has 38 inch Super Swampers, so I am not too surprised this happened. THanks for any and all answers.

Dave
