M37 twin 12V Batteries

I need to replace my batteries for my 24V 1952 M37. Do both batteries need to be replace at the same time. What brand/model is recommended? Should I be look for the best zero cranking amps for the price? Will local Wal-mart 12v batteries do the job? Should the batteries be reversed once a year to balance the chemical wear?
