Fruit was a rare thing to inner city children. And oranges were down right exotic in the northern latitudes pre-war.

And the way to share an apple was for the original owner to eat the outer half, then give the core to one less fortunate. This is the root of Tom Sawyer trading an apple core for some fence painting. And also the root of Chip and Dale's bit about "Apple Core, who's your friend?" But that used to be a three way game of letting a third party decide who got to eat the core. The core was tossed in friendship, not in malice.
