Although paint today is nothing like the paint that's been around forever. Most of the manufactured stuff with paint on it these days is powder-coated, and they advertise it like it's a feature, but its real advantages are in manufacturing. It's easier and cheaper to apply, once you have the equipment, and and has less environmental and health issues than paint. Those are all good reasons to use it in a factory, but that doesn't mean its a better product for the end user. I have seen a lot of power coat fade, crack, and peel off when exposed to the weather.

And yes, if it was all that great, all the auto manufacturers would be using it. The fact that they're sticking with solvent-based paint, despite all the disadvantages, tells you something. Finish is important in selling a car, and durability counts for something too if only because you don't want people seeing a bunch of vehicles with your nameplate on them and the paint peeling off. You can bet they've looked hard into powder coat, but have decided it's just not good enough for automotive use.
