I suspect that filling it half way up will supply plenty of lube, and by the time it comes out the lower hole, it will have an adequate amount. Plus leave some room for expansion.

I guess somebody could add some actual data to this discussion, by using first the book method, then Tim's bottom-up method, and see how much additional grease Tim's method uses. I doubt there is a big difference, because the grease doesn't flow like water and will pile up inside before it comes out the low hole. Likewise Tim's method will leave air pockets, like between the knuckle hemispheres.

And the flow from a grease gun will be like a pile of yarn, lots of trapped air.

So I think to each his own?
