The M37/PW hubs obviously work fine packed clear full of grease, but I still wonder if it's necessary. The only reason I can think of to do that is that the seals aren't very good and the more grease you have in there the less room there is for water to get in. But in terms of lubrication, it seems like it would be find to just pack grease around the joints themselves by hand and leave most of the housing empty. You look at a bearing that has run a long time and there's very little grease in the actual bearing cage any more, just a thin film of oil, and yet the bearing is fine.
