I've always heard they were discontinued due to EPA regs that the flathead motor wouldn't meet and crash test safety. I think padded dashes were added to meet that somewhat. Probably the low sales and double tooling if something wore out had a big factor as well. I know the exports had the /6's but I assume they wouldn't meet the standards either.

As you said, It's amazing they made them as long as they did.
