OT, anyone have experience with an 01 Ford Focus?

Got a call from my Son Gordon from Florida, saying his transmission was acting up. He has an 01 Ford Focus, with an automatic transmission. I saked him if he had checked the transmission fluid? He hasnt yet. I did some checking on the net to see what they used for ATF in them, and saw a posting stating that on some pre 2005 Focus's (foci?)there is no didstick, it is a closed system and you just dump the oil and refill. Never heard of that, but that dosent mean anything.
So, anyone know what they would use? Type F would be my guess?
Also, anyone shed any light on when they did this "closed system"?
