All very good points. Over the years I have been working on my 51 ffPW. I have gone through it mechanically and corrected any issues. It now will do 50 to 55 on the freeway without any issues. Going up hills is still a problem. I get between 14 to 15 miles a gallon on the open road and worse in town. It is amazing the improvements you can get by having everything working properly.

1) I have gone through the whole drive train and axles making sure that everything is up to specs. I have replaced bearing and etc plus adjusted what needed to be. It is amazing how much of an improvement in speed and mph you can get when you get the slop out of the system.

2) I did rebuild the engine years ago when it spun a bearing. I did have it bored as there was some pitting on one cylinder wall due to a blown head gasket. The cylinder were only 3 to 4 thousandths over so it was not needed form that aspect.

3) I rebuilt the carb and it ran worse with the new jets so I put the old ones back in and it runs great (the carbs with the governor have larger jets and the rebuild kits out there have the smaller jets from carbs without the governor so the make the engine run lean).

4) I run Michelin 9.00 X 16 XZL which are 36" in diameter. It helps a little on road speed.

5) The next thing I will do is put a 2.5 to 3" exhaust system in. The factory system is very restrictive. It actually has a smaller pipe out of the muffler than it has going in. That should help some.
