the path of least resistance for exhaust to exit the head is up. piston is pushing the fumes up. so when you route the exhaust immeditely down you force the exhaust to have to travel 180 degrees to get out of th emanifold. the chev ram horn manifold, the high perf small block mopar, and a few other manifolds are designed in a similar way for the same reason.
