The biggest mistake most people make is the compressor is too small. The more CFM (volume of air) you have, the better off you will be. The size of the pot really only determines how often you need to re-fill it.

The two most important parts are the size of the compressor and the size of the nozzle. The size of the sand particles (grit) determine how rough the surface will be when you are done.

The rule of thumb is to multiply your electric motor HP x 4 to calculate CFM (cubic feet per minute) of air volume. A 7 HP compressor will only put out about 28-30 CFM. The compressor tank size doesn't matter much in blasting, the size of the compressor does.

Rent a towable diesel 100-185 CFM compressor for a day. Use any size pot that you have, but remember that the nozzle will effect the pressure (velocity) of the sand particles leaving the hoze.

a 1/4" venturi nozzle on a 125-185 CFM compressor with some medium or fine sand will make fast work to bare metal.
