Frankly they should be outlawed in most places, like Western Washington. Everybody thinks they have to have them even though it only snows maybe a couple of days every few years. Meanwhile, they really do eat up the roads especially with all the traffic they have there. However in places where there's always compact snow and ice on the roads for months every winter, they really are a good thing. I never ran studs until I moved to Wallace, and I didn't miss them. Here, they make all the difference, and with snow on the roads most of the time, and not much traffic, the road wear is less of an issue. On my pickup I'm still running the Sears (Michelin) studded snow tires that my dad bought for his 1969 Oldsmobile. I think he sold that car in 1980, and the tires still have couple winters left on them.
