My wife and I were attending a convention in NYC, ing -73 or -74. On a very stormy Friday, late afternoon after the contruction crews had left, we visited the WTC. We rode the elevators up to about the 60th floor which was high as the passenger elevators went, and got out and were looking around. Because of the weather we couldn't see much except the traffic jams below that were mostly yellow cabs.
We found an open construction gate going to a stairwell and went up about another to floors. It was just a big open room with no partitions. You could feel the building moving in the wind and if you put your hands on the unfinished joints in the drywall around the elevator shafts, you could feel them shift. Another fascinating thing was watching the plumbing, sprinkler, and electrical risers move back and forth in their floor sleeves. I put a carpenters pencil that I had picked up at the convention in one of the sleeves- it got crushed.
