According to Vintage Power Wagons, distributors will interchange between blocks of the same length. They say the 218 and 230ci blocks have interchangeable distributors.
The shorter blocks have a distributor tang which is about 1/4 inch shorter than in the longer blocks.
You might look at the tech tip articles in their catalog.
I don't know how hard and fast this rule is. But, it's somewhere to begin.
