Thanks for all the replies. I figured out the air gap thing and it doesn't look like it has an exhaust leak any more. I got it fired up and let it warm up and it started smoking like crazy then stopped there must have been some junk down in there. It still runs rough and won't idle when the choke opens up all the way but I think it is in good enough shape to throw some money at it. I had to tweak the timing just to get it to run at all and it's so far off that the timing mark doesn't show up in the light. I think I'll start looking at the distributor, It has new plugs, wires, cap and rotor.

Is there any way to check if the egr valve is working? I took it off cleaned it out fired up the truck without it and blew chunks of carbon everywhere. The plunger moves now, it didn't when I took it off but it does now.

I plan on running a compression test and checking the timing slack using the 1 inch method posted above tomorrow.
