Seems easy enough to test with a fired shell in the chamber. Any gun can do weird things if sufficiently worn-out or abused. I don't own a Rem 700 so can't test it, but I also haven't seen much on any TV documentary that's true. I believe the US army has a bunch of accurized 700s as sniper rifles, so they must not be too bad.

The situation they describe seems like a strange thing for anyone to do, sort of in the category of "If you make something idiot-proof, someone will invent a smarter idiot" Obviously if the gun discharges with the bolt unlatched, the bolt will fly back, the case will probably burst, burning gunpowder will fly out in all directions, and the bullet may or may not go down the barrel. Definitely a dangerous result.

That sort of thing is why "bullpup" rifles scare me. I'd rather have an exploding cartridge/mechanism happen such that the pieces fly sideways in front of my face, than have it happen right next to my cheek with the pieces going into my head.
