Vaughn, I ran into a simular deal with mine a while ago. I was putting a pair of aces on and didn't know the last time the lifters had been ajusted (Manifolds off, easy access) my 1957 motor manual listed the tappet clearences at .010 hot, but hot wasn't going to happen! the exaust manifolds covered the valve covers to the point of not being accessable. so I did as you did, add .002 and go with it. I have a little noise at startup but smoothes out quickly. I think the ajust hot thing is a myth. I didn't, and a lighting bolt hasn't struck me yet!! doing it the way we did it is FINE!! Dave.
