low compression

changed head gasket today on the m37. still have low compression on 3 and 4. head and block are straight. probably need rings. just curious, what happens when the gasket between the intake and exhaust manifolds fails. i'm talking about the gasket below the carb where the two are joined with the four bolts. thanks.
