but are they the same overall length? they have the same gear and bearings on them but if they are different lengths then I need to get the right one on the right side.

the spacer and the shims are determining the position of the gear relative to the bottom of the shaft housing and by default the relationship of the bearing to the cone.

If the shafts are different lengths and have shoulders positioning the spacers at different locations, then the gear location relative to the cone and the housing will be off.

that is causing me to scratch my head. I'm going to take them apart today and check all the lengths and locations of the spacer shoulders and make sure.
