Do you really want to do away with the bar in the front of your bed? I've seen many tents that cover the bed through the years. If you put a piece of plywood down first, they are fairly comfortable. Your bed floor has ridges that WILL grind into your back. There are other tents available that are specifically designed for trucks. I've even seen camper shells that are canvas and will fold up easily.
