First, as Henri pointed out, they are tough to balance. But they look good. Unfortunately, they were not stock on M37's or PW's, though prototypes of both were equipped with them.

Combat rims you see today will not "run flat" with any tire. This is because the rim in cross section is really no rifferent than the standard M37/PW Budd split ring (not split rim) wheel. What held the tire on in the combat rim was a large flat band that was inserted. It literally jammed the tire bead against the rim. It was difficult if not impossible to install with a split ring. The combat rim was easy to bolt on and clamp this bead lock band.

The Dodge 1 1/2 ton 6x6 army tech manual clearly shows this assembly. (Why the 3/4 ton WC manual doesn't, I don't know, since they were equipped with it too.)
