Sorry you didn,t find the humor in the quote, I wasn't being a smartass.Of course we knew you didn't intend on racing your truck and that a speed above 45mph without increasing the rpm's was your aim but,the quote still stands true,To get more speed at less rpm's out of our old trucks is gonna cost, whether its just a change to taller tires, gear change,or OD tranny with a V-8 conversion,"speed will cost you money sonny, how fast do you want to go"?
The NP540 OD tranny is a little hard to come by I'm told so a V-8 would help when adding taller tires and(or) a gear change to get more speed with no increase in rpm's.
Even at 45mph there is gear noise but there are some good products for sound insulation under and inside the cab floor which will at least muffle it until you decide what drivetrain mods you want to make.50mph may be all your after but,in an old PW that equals speed.I like my 251,it gets 10mpg in town and at 50-55mph, 16mpg at 42-45 even without locking hubs which might increase it to 18-20mpg if installed, but the noise is something I accept because I'm too cheap to insulate the cab floor as it is not a daily driver, just my trusty old Big Horn PW I use when needed.
