The dual carb dual exhaust factory system mounts on the 251 engine, not the short block 230. I have both a 251 and 230 Power Wagon and I think the 251 is a lot better. The syncro in the 251 is much better than the non-syncro hooked to the 230...by the time the shift is completed I have lost too much "speed"
I do agree that headers (Phillips Performance) and better carburation will help. Chrysler did make a two barrel carb for this engine, found I think on 56-58 Ply or Dodge. I do have one so I know they exist, but I don't recall exactly which cars had them originally.
I would also mill the head to increase the compression ratio.
