I don't have an answer for fixing the mistake but a suggestion for cleaning it next time. On most hot water heaters for your house there is a drain at the bottom that a garden hose hooks up to nicely.Make sure you use an insulated spray nozzle and it works great as a cheap alternate to a steam cleaner.I'm lucky enough to have a wife that will tolerate me bringing home another vehicle let alone clean it for me!
