I just took my M35 with NDTs on a trip in the snow in the mountains of Idaho and it's true the NDTs are not much good for snow, at least not packed-down snow. I let the air out to 25 psi and put chains on the front and dually chains on one rear axle and it managed okay, but guys with regular 4X4 pickups with big knobby tires were getting through without chains. Maybe that was partly because they weren't as heavy and didn't sink in as much. The M35 had to dig its way down to the road before it would go uphill in 18" of snow. Where the NDTs really shine is on sticky gumbo mud that instantly fills the tread of any normal tires. If you want original, I would say NDTs aren't so bad if you just accept that you have to chain them up for snow. It's not that hard.
