Compressing air for a mine. Mines use lots of air, mostly for drilling but also for running "motors" (air-powered locomotives that pull the ore cars). They even have air-powered chain saws and other tools so as to eliminate the fumes and danger of sparks. There's air available in every working area, but electric wires usually aren't run far from the station (where the hoist stops). I will ask somebody what the cfms and hp are of the compressor they're running today. Not sure if this pair was for the Lucky Friday or the Gold Hunter. It probably wasn't for the Morning, which was the biggest mine back in the old days. They had a water-powered compressor in Grouse Gulch (the sign on I-90 for the exit says "Compressor District" that was run by a Pelton wheel about 20 ft in diameter. Unfortunately it was scrapped out long ago. Somehow these two survived in a locked shed until now.
