In addition to the model number stamped into the web of the differential housing there are numbers stamped into the axle tube. They can be really hard to see if there is surface rust or any grime. I have had to sand them with 400 sand paper to clean the surface well enough to see them. Even then you have to use a flashlight at an angle to really be able to read all of the numbers. Dana puts 2 sets of numbers on the tube. The first is the date and year of manufacture along with the shift. The second is the part number with axle end and gear ratio identifiers. Most often numbers are within a few inches of the differential housing towards the center. The same axles will still will have gear ratio and limited slip tags on one or more of the differential bolts.

On one Dana 44 front axle that came from a International Scout and is now in my Willys Wagon the original gear ratio stamped into the tube does not match the gear ratio tag telling me that the gears have been changed at some point. What I did lean was that it was a 1980 axle with the better caster angle built into axle ends and the original ratio indicated that it was the original axle to the diesel Scout that I took it out of even though someone had swapped the diesel out.

Here is a link to a site that has the information from the Dana Manual. http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/Dana44.htm
