I use this as a guide when I pull a engine/tranny;

If in a normal running application, the tranny hangs off the back of the bell house (no rear mount), I pull it intact.

If in a normal running application, the Tranny is the 3rd mount (rear) on the engine/trammy combo, I drop the tranny first.

WHY ? The tranny being the 3rd engine mount (rear) is used on more current applications.
These applications typically use a Aluminum
Bell housing fastened to the engine or adapter with .375" bolts. That mounting scheme is not designed to hang the tranny off the back without support. With the tranny hanging off the rear, you have a tremendous bending moment. You could, I repeat could, break the aluminum bell house, rip .375" bolts through the aluminum bell house or worse. So this design as mentioned always gets the tranny pulled.
