You use a chainsaw? Why not do it by hand with a handsaw so as not to disturb the forest creatures and be more at one with the woods? ;)
I used to split our wood by hand when I was younger but have since moved on. I can get just as tired using a splitter but at the end of the day have 10 cord split as opposed to 2 on the tough stuff.
We don't get a lot of extended below freezing days here so I have to make do.
This discusion reminds me of the Amish we have in our area. They cling to the old ways but warp the lines to absurdity. Case in piont:
They are not allowed to have self propelled machinery for farming as it's "too" modern. I have seen them pull a tractor and baler through the field with horses and bale that way. I had to chuckle at that one.
