is it not the water that when trapped splits the rock ? is it not the fast water that makes sand out of rock ? let the wood be frozen and it splits and if you cant start your wedges (yes Wedges two , three )use the chain saw to make a opener fit in wedge and USE ONLY THE WEIGHT OF THE SLEDGE to "bump" the wedge in > you dont need to strong to fire the hammer just the weight and lose hands will do the work and lighter sledge is far better than a heavy one . and i dont own a log splitter yet ~ Copey
