Hate to say it but those $100 6.5 HP OHV gas engines they sell at Harbor Freight are a pretty good deal. Of course they're made in China, but they're an exact copy of the similar Honda engines. The word is that Honda not only sold the Chinese factory the rights to build them, but old them all the tooling as well. The one I have starts easy and runs good. I've never much like the Briggs anyway. They're 1930s technology and hard start if everything isn't exactly right.

OHV design is more efficient that the Briggs flat-head, and even if the 6.5 HP is optimistic, you've got power to spare. I would not want electric on a log splitter, since it needs to be portable. Even just using it near the house, long extension cords lose a lot of voltage. Plus, you can't get a 5 HP electric motor for $100 unless you run into a salvage one somewhere, and if you do, it'll surely be 3 phase.
