Today's lumber will be hard pressed to last as long as the oak that was used in the 40s and 50s. Be sure you use white oak, heart wood, if possible. And I would consider thoroughly soaking the blocks in some high grade form of wood preservative. (Cuprinol is probably the best, if available. Will have greenish tint)
