Not really. First, the transfer case is usually never level. they usually are tilted to the rear. You can have the front pinion out of plane with out as many problems as doing it with the rear pinion. The front axle is not used nearly as much. Once comment in the original post was that the Dana 44 had a 2 degree negative angle on the front pinion. This I believe means that the pinion is angled towards the rear. I suspect that this was done to better match the pinion angle to the rest of the drive train.
